Kaizen . . . there we were, all huddled in our factory getting things so perfected even God couldn't do better, we improved production, increased revenues, drove sales to new peaks, we even got all the managers "American size raises" stock options and all . . . meanwhile the board of directors looked to the 85 cent an hour self-perpetuating, liability free, non-union, seven day a week, 14 hour a day, working women of China, stole our ideas, our efficiencies, our jobs, our patents, our methodologies, our souls, and moved everything, lock, stock, and barrel, off-shore, to the greater satisfaction of the shareholders and causing our economic ruination. Capitalism is a fraud foisted on the working people of America by America's Uber- Rich, the friends of George Bush, the coupon clippers and stockholders of the world, oil barons and Saudis included - we are their slaves, we don't even have as many rights as biblical slaves! Kaizen be damned! Until capitalism is changed to include some responsibility to its slaves, nothing will change!

@Kristen I'm glad you finally get it. Now, tell me how you plan on using it!

@Arswino Good stuff. I especially like discard waiting time. Time spent waiting is time wasted. Or, to borrow a great quote from "Arthur and the Invisibles," "Patience is the only thing I limit myself on."

Here are some tips to simplify (also based on my experiences) :
1. Focus on solutions, not on problems
2. Make in mind that next process is our customer
3. Make a report on just a sheet of paper if possible, discard unnecessary reports.
4. Remove unnecessary movements.
5. Remove unnecessary processes
6. Discard waiting time

Great, great, great article. I never really completely understood Kaizen until I read this. And now I feel like I not only "get" it, but know how to apply it. Thanks!

@Chad You know, a process isn't right all the time. However, for regular predictable tasks, it is 100% necessary. I might have to do a follow-up article about when process fails.

Nice job on highlighting process and measurement as the keys to improving results. I know I've always benefited from having a process guiding my actions and then seeking accountability through measurement.
Measurement also helps keep you honest with yourself by creating leverage in your life to achieve the goals you set (and hopefully wrote down!)
